What types of charging cards are there, and why do I see ‘Network’, ‘Private’ or ‘Roaming’ sessions?
When you create a new charging card, you’ll see different types of charging cards. The options available depend on the type of account you’re using.
There are two scenarios:
- Account with Employer / Employee users
- Account with a public or semi-public charging point, or an account with just a charging card
1. Account with Employer/Employee users
If your charging point is linked to an employer, you will be offered three possible types of charging cards.
Available charging card types for an employer/employee account

Employee with a home charging point
Use this type when the employee is permitted to charge both at home and at work.
- Charging at the workplace is possible.
- Charging at the home charging point is possible.
- Home charging sessions are automatically billed to the employer (split billing).
- Charging sessions using this charging card are recorded in Wattify as Network sessions.
Employee without a home charging point
Use this option if the employee is only permitted to charge at the employer’s charging points.
- Charging at the workplace is possible.
- No home allowance or split billing.
- Ideal for employees without their own home charging point.
- Charging sessions using this charging card are recorded in Wattify as ‘Network’ sessions.
Whitelisted private charging card
Use this type when the employee has a charging point at home, but the employer does not need to pay for the home charging sessions.
- The charging card works on the home charging point.
- Private sessions are not invoiced to the employer.
- Suitable when home charging remains entirely private.
- Charging sessions using this charging card are recorded in Wattify as ‘Private’ sessions and are not invoiced.
2. Account with a public or semi-public charging point, or an account with just a charging card
If your charging site is not linked to an employer, you will be offered two possible types of charging cards.
Available charging card types for a public or semi-public charging point

Charging on the Wattify Network
Use this type if you wish to charge using your charging card across the entire Wattify Network.
- Works at all compatible charging points within the Wattify Network.
- Charging sessions are billed as normal.
- This is the most popular option.
- Charging sessions using this charging card are recorded in Wattify as Network sessions.
Whitelisted private charging card
Use this type when the charging card is intended solely for private use at a specific charging site.
- Valid only at the charging points for which the charging card has been authorised.
- Private sessions are not billed.
- Ideal for family members or residents who are allowed to charge for free.
- Charging sessions using this charging card are recorded in Wattify as ‘Private’ sessions and are not billed.
What are Roaming sessions?
As well as Network and Private sessions, you may also come across Roaming sessions.
A Roaming session occurs when a user with a roaming charging card (e.g. Shell Recharge, Plugsurfing, Chargemap, etc.) charges at:
a public or semi-public Wattify charging point;
or an employee’s semi-public home charging point.
In this case, the charging session is not billed via Wattify, but via the roaming provider to which the charging card is linked.
Important: Do not add a roaming charging card to your Wattify account if you want the charging sessions to be billed via the roaming provider. By linking the charging card to your Wattify account, the session will be treated as a Network session rather than a Roaming session.
